The holiday season is just around the corner and with that comes different holiday parties; at the office, with family, or with friends. So how is a guy supposed to be dressed for such occasions? Well, first thing to keep in mind is that these holiday parties are just that – holiday parties. It’s meant to be festive. Meaning you shouldn’t dress the same as you would to the office or to an average night out. Treat these events for what they are – winter holiday parties. Think about how you can dress differently than what you would for a regular office day while at the same time representing your style, and of course, showing up to the event in the right appearance.
A simple rule to remember is the three piece rule; it only takes three pieces to put together your perfect holiday outfit. A shirt, pants, and something to layer over the shirt (for example a sweater or a coat). You will choose these three different pieces depending on the event you’re going to.
Are you going straight from the office to a holiday event? Remember this simple rule: keep two of the clothing pieces you have worn during the day, and swap out one or two pieces for something fancier when you join the event.
To make it simple, all holiday events are divided into three basic winter holiday parties:
Holiday Party #1: Professional
A classic dark, blue suit will do the trick for any professional holiday parties. At work, pair your suit with a classic white shirt, and before the party, swap the shirt for something with a darker color (why not another shade of blue?). Don’t forget to also change, or add, your tie and pocket square for a more festive look.

Holiday Party #2: Family/Casual
You don’t want to feel too formal; you want to feel dressed for the occasion. For this event, choose chinos paired with a casual shirt or sweater. This is a great, less formal, look that is perfect for your family holiday get together.
Holiday Party #3: Social
This can be a tricky one – it’s not as formal as a professional holiday party, but you also don’t want to be dressed too relaxed. The best way is to combine a pair of clean, dark denim jeans, with a clean shirt. Try to stick to shirt colors such as white, black or navy. Top off the outfit with a more formal jacket or blazer; this will add a more dressier touch to the outfit. Feeling a bit bold? Switch the blazer for a tuxedo jacket – you will stand out in the crowd, look fashionable, and you’re likely to be the only one with this outfit combination.

The last but maybe most important point: Take time to get your suit tailored! By having your holiday suits tailored you allow your pieces to be made by you – this will boost your confidence, and you can be certain your outfits are made with attention to detail. Remember, you want to portray the same confidence when going to the parties as you would when going to the office.
